100 years is a very long time: July 2014 primary assembly and presentation

Theme: War and conflict yesterday and today
Country: Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC)

gorffennaf_2014_christian_aidOur July primary assembly focuses on the start of the First World War, 100 years ago to this year and also looks at the effects of war and conflict today.  We highlight the work of one of Christian Aid’s partners in the DRC bringing together families who were separated because of war.

Shukuru Binguru had to flee with her brother and sisters when their village was attacked. Unfortunately they were separated from their parents, but through the help of an organisation called Central Africa Baptist Community, the family has been reunited. .

Even though there is less fighting in the DRC today, the effects of nearly 15 years of conflict in the country remain, and Christian Aid’s partners are working with the people affected to rebuild their lives.

Dulce et decorum est pro patria mori?: July 2014 secondary assembly and presentation

Theme: War and conflict yesterday and today
Countries: Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC)

Our July secondary assembly focuses on some of the poets who fought in the First World War, and their response to what they saw. We look also at the effects of war and conflict across the world today.

One such country is the DRC, which has suffered from nearly 15 years of internal conflict. Shukuru Binguru had to flee with her brother and sisters when their village was attacked. Unfortunately they were separated from their parents, but through the help of an organisation called Central Africa Baptist Community, the family has been reunited.

This is an excellent way of presenting to the students the 100 anniversary of the beginning of the First World War, and how war and conflict still affects communities around the world.
Christian Aid works helps people who have been affected by conflict and promotes peaceful solutions to problems.

Age: 11-14.
Subject areas: Citizenship, R.E., Geography and History
